Why this petition matters

Started by Mariya Shaikh

Per 2010 statistics (http://www.city-data.com/county/religion/Wake-County-NC.html Muslims comprise of 11% of the religious adherents of Wake County. We celebrate two religious holidays during the year:

Eid ul Fitr - marking  end of Ramadan (30 days of fasting)

Eid ul Adha - marking the commemoration of Hajj (pilgrimage to Makkah).

It is preferred that our children take days off from school during these holidays. However, with testing and course work pressures, many of our children are burdened with school work to make up for these missed days. The only other option left for these students is to not miss school and forego the religious festivities that they would rather be a part of. As a parent, a tax payer, and an inclusive citizen of Wake County, I would like the school board to consider marking these two religious holidays as WCPSS holidays on upcoming school calendar.

Muslims follow the lunar calendar and though the dates are not fixed, yet most projections show Eid ul Adha will fall on 7/31/2020 and Eid ul FItr will fall on 5/13/2021. Since the school board will be finalizing the school calendar for 2020/21 in coming weeks, I request that the above dates be taken into consideration as proposed WCPSS holidays.

We are fully committed to success for every student in Wake County. By acknowledging and accommodating for holidays that are practiced by a growing percentage of WCPSS students, this calendar would exhibit inclusivity and tolerance for diverse cultures represented in Wake County. There are several examples of other districts in the country that have adopted this measure as a sign of acknowledgement of the growing percentage of Muslims in US. Holidays that reflect cultural diversity are a great source of learning for the entire student body and create an environment that is more beneficial to teachers and staff.

For these reasons and so many more, we ask that you support and approve the proposal for these two additional holidays on the 2020/21 school calendar:

Eid ul Fitr- May 13, 2021
Eid ul Adha – July 31, 2020

Thank you for your time, service, and consideration.
