Why this petition matters

Started by Milan Maksimovic

Egypt's indigenous Coptic Orthodox Christians have always been subject to persecution. Many of us expected the situation to improve following two recent uprisings and the election of President Sisi.

STOP the genocide in Egypt. Give Coptic citizens protection and freedom they deserve.

But many don’t know that the Egyptian Government is complicit in this violence – quietly turning a blind eye  while angry mobs continue to commit crimes against Coptic Christians. In the past few weeks alone there have been at  least four attacks on Coptic Christian communities in districts such as Minya and Isna.

Egypt’s Coptic Christian minority is facing a surge in sectarian attacks, with increased instances of violence and threats from Muslim neighbors forcing churches to close and casting a pall over Orthodox Easter on Sunday.

In January 2017, Coptic Christians had to flee the province of North Sinai after the Egyptian security failed to stop massacres of Coptic Christians.

It's time for the International Community to remind Egypt of it's agreement to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights which states "Everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion; this right includes freedom  to change his religion or belief, and freedom, either alone or in community with others and in public or private,

to manifest his religion or belief in teaching, practice, worship and observance." (Article 18).

It’s time for the International community to stand alongside Egypt's Coptic population people in calling for those  responsible for the violence and killings to be held to account.

STOP attacks on Coptic Christians and give your citizens protection and freedom they deserve.
