Why this petition matters

Started by Jain Centre Leicester

We have recently learnt of a project to pedestrianise York Road (LE1 5TT) in Leicester.

The issue

We are of the view that the part-pedestrianise of the section of York Road leading onto Oxford Street will be hugely detrimental for Jain Centre, which is based on Oxford Street next to York Road.  This is because:

  • Jain Centre is based on Oxford Street, with almost no parking available on-site. There is no parking space outside the temple, on the main road.
  • York Road is commonly used by community members for off-road parking when visiting the centre after 6.00pm. It is a particularly salient space for disabled guests to park 7 days a week.
  • There are a large number of members and guest that use the centre regularly. The safest and closest space to drop / collect them is on York Road.

Whilst we appreciate that there will be some permitted ‘business access’, however, it may hinder the rear exit (fire exit) of the centre.

What we require:

We need to convince the Council's Central Area and Project Management team to discontinue plans to part-pedestrianise York Road or provide an alternative proposal(s) that address our concerns.

How you can help:

Jain Centre Leicester is visited regularly by its members, but also school children and guests nationally.  We believe that the plans to part-pedestrianise the road will significantly hinder access to the Jain Centre.

Please sign this petition to ensure that we can continue being a centre easily accessible to children who learn here, devotees who pray here, the elderly who are supported here and guests who are inspired here.
