Dear BUSINESS/HOTEL,

 As Cambodian residents, we love coming to your business, but we are concerned about the amount of rubbish in Cambodia, particularly plastic. As you may be aware, Cambodia, and the entire world, is going through a huge plastic crisis. 9 million tons of plastic end up in the ocean every year! Asia is by far the largest contributor, with rivers in Asia responsible for over 80% of plastic waste that ends up in the oceans. In fact, eight of the world’s 10 worst polluting rivers are in Asia, including the Mekong. Plastic is not easily absorbed by our planet. Scientists estimate that, at best, it will take 500 years for a plastic cup to disintegrate. 

In Phnom Penh, 10 million plastic bags are used, and discarded, each day. Over 4.5 million plastic bottles are used in Siem Reap each month. Most of this plastic never gets recycled (only 18 percent globally) and, in Cambodia, a huge proportion doesn’t even make it to landfills: it ends up in drainages, rivers and, ultimately, the ocean. Anyone who has spent time in Cambodia will sadly be familiar with how much rubbish is on the streets, in the countryside, in drains, rivers and on the beaches.

This is increasingly causing problems to residents. For example this past June, the Boeung Trabek canal in Phnom Penh, blocked by garbage, caused flooding of nearby residences. The Department of Public Works and Transport explained that in the previous three months authorities had cleared over 1,000 tonnes of rubbish just in the one canal – a huge proportion was plastic.

So what can we do? Well, there is actually a lot that your business can do. The Cambodian government has already taken some positive steps, with new regulations on the use of plastic bags in big supermarkets (charging 400 riels per bag). But this is not enough. At a minimum we need to consume less single-use plastics starting with "the big 5": straws, cups, bottles, bags and styrofoam boxes. Businesses can be at the forefront of this change.   

We are writing to you today to ask you to take a stand against single-use plastic, and to be a business that sets an example. We want to continue to frequent your business, but we ask you to make these changes or we will consider taking our business elsewhere. We all need to do our bit to keep this country, and our planet, clean.

 We are asking for five simple steps:

1.     Please offer a glass of water. This is not hard in a country where you can get a (reusable) gallon of water for $1*. Some people may prefer to buy their own bottled water but it is unacceptable not to offer water in a glass (or cup). Plenty of businesses in Phnom Penh are already doing this, join them!

2.     Please stop offering plastic straws. Most people, unless they have medical needs, don’t need a straw! Just stop offering straws or, if necessary you can offer non-plastic straws. There are bamboo, paper, stainless steel and corn straws readily available in Cambodia** and the long-term cost difference is marginal. Plenty of businesses in Phnom Penh are already doing this, join them!

3.     Please switch to non-plastic cups for eat-in at your café/restaurant/hotel. There is no reason to offer people drinks in a plastic cup when they drink/eat on-site. This is becoming a worryingly common trend in Cambodia as cafes use branded plastic-cups. Invest in glass, ceramic or stainless steel cups/glasses – you can brand them too! Or you can offer a discount for people who bring their own cups.

4.     Ditch the bag or use biodegradable plastic bags. Ask your customers: do you need a bag? Most times they don’t, yet one trillion plastic bags are used worldwide every year. For those occasions when a bag is necessary, consider cloth bags or there’s an awesome Cambodian company*** making bags from cassava – get on board and use them!

5.     For take-away, when possible, please offer biodegradable cutlery and containers. There is another awesome Cambodian company making biodegradable stuff**** that is only marginally more expensive and so much better for our planet (at minimum, definitely ditch the polystyrene!)

And of course spread the word! Talk to your staff about plastic, we all need to make a difference. Did you know right now there is around 6.3 billion tonnes of plastic waste on the planet that is not being recycled? Half of that was produced in the last fifteen years. This problem is only going to get worse unless we start doing something now. 

Some of you may already be doing one, or even two of these 5 things. We are challenging you to do one more or, better, do them all! We are confident that you can do this, as other businesses in Cambodia have already started doing (to name a few, thank you Artillery, Backyard Café, Eleven One Kitchen, Friends, Little Red Fox, Blue Elephant Hotel, Expresso Café, Vibe, Lot 369, Lone Star, Sundown and Knai Ban Chatt for leading the way). The 5 things we ask of you are not hard. You can start today!

As an extra incentive, if you support these actions and show leadership in the fight against plastic, we can add your name, to a list of “Green Businesses” we are compiling (we will also make one of non-green businesses that we hope you are not a part of). We will circulate this list widely on social media. There are so many of us that care about the state of this country and the world. We really do want to continue to visit your business, so please, make these changes, and become a Green Business today!

ជូនចំពោះម្ចាស់ភោជនីយដ្ឋាន/សណ្ឋាគារជាទីរាប់អាន

ក្នុងនាមជាប្រជាពលរដ្ឋកម្ពុជា យើងពិតជារីករាយក្នុងការប្រើប្រាស់សេវារបស់អ្នកណាស់ ប៉ុន្ដែយើងក៏មានក្ដីបារម្ភអំពីបរិមាណសំរាមក្នុងប្រទេសកម្ពុជាផងដែរ ជាពិសេសគឺសំរាមផ្លាស្ទីក។ ដូចដែលអ្នកបានដឹងស្រាប់ហើយថា ប្រទេសកម្ពុជា ក៏ដូចជាពិភពលោកទាំងមូល កំពុងជួបវិបត្តិ ផ្លាស្ទីកធ្ងន់ធ្ងរ។ កាកសំណល់ផ្លាស្ទីកចំនួន 9 លានតោន ត្រូវបានបង្ហូរចូលទៅក្នុងសមុទ្រជារៀងរាល់ឆ្នាំ ក្នុងនោះ តំបន់អាស៊ីគឺជាអ្នករួមចំណែកធំជាងគេ ព្រោះទន្លេនានានៅក្នុងតំបន់អាស៊ីបាន​ហូរនាំយកកាកសំណល់ផ្លាស្ទីកជាង 80% ទៅក្នុងសមុទ្រ។ ជាការពិតណាស់ដែលថាទន្លេចំនួន 15 ក្នុងចំណោមទន្លេទាំង 20 ដែលមានការបំពុលបរិស្ថានធ្ងន់ធ្ងរជាងគេនៅលើពិភពលោក គឺស្ថិតក្នុងតំបន់អាស៊ី ក្នុងនោះរួមទាំងទន្លេមេគង្គផងដែរ។ ផ្លាស្ទីកមិនងាយរលាយចូលក្នុងភពផែនដីឡើយ។ អ្នកវិទ្យាសាស្ត្របានប៉ាន់ស្មានថា ដើម្បីធ្វើឲ្យកែវផ្លាស្ទីកមួយរលាយគឺត្រូវចំណាយពេលរហូតទៅដល់ 500 ឆ្នាំ ។

នៅរាជធានីភ្នំពេញ ថង់ផ្លាស្ទីកចំនួន 10 លាន ត្រូវបានប្រើប្រាស់ និងបោះចោលជារៀងរាល់ថ្ងៃ ហើយ ដបផ្លាស្ទីកចំនួន 4.5 លានដប ក៏ត្រូវបានប្រើប្រាស់ជារៀងរាល់ខែនៅក្នុងខេត្តសៀមរាបផងដែរ។ កាកសំណល់ផ្លាស្ទីកភាគច្រើនមិនត្រូវបានយកមកប្រើប្រាស់ឡើងវិញឡើយ (មានតែកាកសំណល់ផ្លាស្ទីកចំនួន 18 ភាគរយប៉ុណ្ណោះដែលត្រូវបានប្រើប្រាស់ឡើងវិញនៅទូទាំងពិភពលោក) ហើយក្នុងប្រទេសកម្ពុជា ចំនួនសមាមាត្រដ៏ធំនេះមិនអាចធ្វើឲ្យប្រទេសកម្ពុជាក្លាយជាទីលានចាក់សំរាមបានឡើយ ពីព្រោះសំរាមទាំងនោះបានហូរចូលទៅក្នុងប្រព័ន្ធលូ ទន្លេ និងចុងក្រោយគឺ
សមុទ្រផងដែរ។ អ្នកដែលបានចំណាយពេលមកប្រទេសកម្ពុជា នឹងបានឃើញ សំរាមជាច្រើននៅតាមដងផ្លូវ តាមតំបន់ជនបទ ប្រព័ន្ធលូ និងឆ្នេរសមុទ្រនានា។

 សំរាមទាំងនេះកំពុងបង្កបញ្ហាជាច្រើនដល់ប្រជាពលរដ្ឋ។ ឧទាហរណ៍ កាលពីខែមិថុនាកន្លងទៅ ដោយសារតែមានសំរាមច្រើនពេក ទើបធ្វើឲ្យប្រឡាយទឹកបឹងត្របែកមានការកកស្ទះ និងបង្កជាទឹកជំនន់លិចផ្ទះប្រជាពលរដ្ឋនៅតំបន់នោះផងដែរ។ មន្ទីរសាធារណការ និងដឹកជញ្ជូន បានពន្យល់ថា ការពីបីខែមុន អាជ្ញាធរបានសម្អាតសំរាមជាង 1,000 តោនចេញពីប្រឡាយមួយនេះ ដែល​ភាគច្រើនគឺជាសំរាមផ្លាស្ទីក។

ដូច្នេះ តើយើងត្រូវធ្វើដូចម្ដេច? ជាការពិតណាស់ គឺមានវិធីសាស្រ្តជាច្រើនដែលអាជីវកម្មរបស់អ្នកអាចអនុវត្តបាន។ រដ្ឋាភិបាលកម្ពុជាបានចាត់វិធានការវិជ្ជមានមួយចំនួនរួចមកហើយ ដែលវិធានការទាំងនោះមានដូចជា ការបង្កើតបទប្បញ្ញត្តិថ្មីៗស្ដីពីការប្រើប្រាស់ថង់ផ្លាស្ទីកនៅតាមផ្សារទំនើបធំៗ (ថង់ផ្លាស្ទីកមួយតម្លៃ 400 រៀល)។ ប៉ុន្តែវិធានការទាំងនេះមិនទាន់គ្រប់គ្រាន់ឡើយ។ ក្នុងជំហានដំបូង យើងត្រូវកាត់បន្ថយការប្រើប្រាស់ថង់ផ្លាស្ទីក ដោយចាប់ផ្ដើមជាមួយ “សម្ភារៈធំៗទាំង 4” ថង់ ដប ពែង និងគ្រឿងផ្ទះបាយ និងទុយោបឺត។ អាជីវកម្មនានាអាចនាំមុខគេនៅក្នុងការផ្លាស់ប្ដូរនេះ។

 លិខិតរបស់យើងផ្ញើជូនអ្នកនៅពេលនេះដើម្បីស្នើសុំឲ្យអ្នកគាំទ្រគោលជំហរប្រឆាំងនឹងការប្រើប្រាស់ផ្លាស្ទីកម្ដងបោះចោល​ និងធ្វើជាអាជីវកម្មគំរូផងដែរ។ យើងចង់បន្តចេញចូល
ទីតាំងជីវកម្មរបស់អ្នកឲ្យបានញឹកញាប់ ប៉ុន្តែយើងចង់ឲ្យអ្នកធ្វើការផ្លាស់ប្ដូរចំណុចទាំងនេះ បើមិនដូច្នោះទេ យើងនឹងពិចារណាអំពីអាជីកម្មនៅទីកន្លែងផ្សេង។ យើងទាំងអស់គ្នាត្រូវចូលរួមចំណែកធ្វើកិច្ចការបន្តិចបន្តួចដើម្បីរក្សាភាពស្អាតនៅក្នុងប្រទេសនេះ ក៏ដូចជានៅលើភពផែនដីរបស់យើងទាំងមូលផងដែរ។

 យើងស្នើសុំឲ្យអ្នកអនុវត្តវិធានការសាមញ្ញទាំងប្រាំដូចខាងក្រោម៖

1.     សូមផ្ដល់ទឹកមួយកែវ៖ ការផ្ដល់ទឹកមួយកែវមិនពិបាកនោះទេសម្រាប់ប្រទេសដែលអាចទិញទឹកមួយធុង (ប្រើប្រាស់ឡើងវិញ) ត្រឹមតម្លៃ 1 ដុល្លារ*។ មនុស្សមួយចំនួនចូលចិត្តទិញទឹកដប ដោយខ្លួនឯង ប៉ុន្តែទង្វើនេះមិនអាចទទួលយកបានឡើយ ចំពោះការមិនផ្ដល់ទឹកដាក់កែវ (ឬ ពែង)។

2.     សូមបញ្ឈប់ការផ្ដល់ទុយោបឺតផ្លាស្ទីក៖ មនុស្សភាគច្រើនមិនសូវប្រើទុយោបឺតនោះទេ លើកលែងតែអ្នកដែលមានតម្រូវការផ្នែកវេជ្ជសាស្ត្រ។ អ្នកអាចផ្ដល់ជូនទុយោទឹកមិនមែនផ្លាស្ទីក បាន ប្រសិនបើចាំបាច់។ ទុយោបឺតមិនមែនផ្លាស្ទីកនេះគឺធ្វើពីឫស្សី ក្រដាស ដែកអ៊ីណុក ឬ​​ដើមពោតដែលអាចរកបាននៅក្នុងប្រទេសកម្ពុជា** ហើយភាពខុសគ្នានៃថ្លៃចំណាយរយៈពេល​វែងគឺទាប។

3.     សូមប្ដូរទៅប្រើពែងមិនមែនផ្លាស្ទីក សម្រាប់ការពិសារអាហារនៅក្នុងហាងកាហ្វេ/ភោជនីយដ្ឋាន​/សណ្ឋាគាររបស់អ្នក៖ គ្មានហេតុផលណាមួយដែលត្រូវផ្ដល់កែវផ្លាស្ទីកជូនអតិថិជន នៅពេលដែលពួកគាត់ពិសារអាហារ/ភេសជ្ជៈក្នុងហាងឡើយ។ ទង្វើនេះកំពុងក្លាយជានិន្នាការដែលគួរឲ្យព្រួយបារម្ភជាទូទៅក្នុងប្រទេសកម្ពុជា ព្រោះហាងកាហ្វេប្រើប្រាស់ពែងផ្លាស្ទីកមានស្លាកសញ្ញា។ អ្នកក៏អាចចំណាយប្រាក់ដើម្បីដាក់ស្លាកសញ្ញានៅលើកែវ/ពែងធ្វើពីកែវ សេរ៉ាមិក ឬដែក
អ៊ីណុក​បានដូចគ្នាផងដែរ។ 

4.     ឈប់ប្រើថង់ផ្លាស្ទីក ឬប្រើថង់ផ្លាស្ទីកដែលងាយរលាយ៖ ត្រូវសួរអតិថិជនរបស់អ្នកថា៖ តើត្រូវការថង់ឬទេ? ពួកគាត់ភាគច្រើនមិនត្រូវការទេ ប៉ុន្តែជារៀងរាល់ឆ្នាំ ថង់ផ្លាស្ទីកចំនួនប្រមាណមួយទ្រីលានត្រូវបានប្រើប្រាស់នៅទូទាំងពិភពលោក។ នៅពេលចាំបាច់ត្រូវការថង់ផ្លាស្ទីក ត្រូវពិចារណាប្រើប្រាស់ថង់ក្រណាត់ ឬមានក្រុមហ៊ុនកម្ពុជាគួរឲ្យចាប់អារម្មណ៍មួយដែលផលិត ថង់ធ្វើពីដំឡូងមី ពោលគឺត្រូវចាប់ផ្ដើមប្រើប្រាស់ថង់ប្រភេទនេះទាំងអស់គ្នា។

5.     សម្រាប់ការវេចខ្ចប់ ប្រសិនបើអាច សូមប្រើគ្រឿងផ្ទះបាយ និងប្រអប់ដែលងាយរលាយ៖
ក្រុមហ៊ុនកម្ពុជាគួរឲ្យចាប់អារម្មណ៍មួយចំនួនបានបង្កើតគ្រឿងសម្ភារៈដែលងាយរលាយ****ដែលមានតម្លៃថ្លៃជាងគ្រឿងសម្ភារៈធម្មតាបន្តិចប៉ុណ្ណោះ ហើយមានភាពល្អប្រសើរសម្រាប់ភពផែនដីទៀតផង (យ៉ាងហោចណាស់ បានបញ្ឈប់ការប្រើប្រាស់ប៉ូលីស្ទីរ៉ែនជាស្ថាពរ)

ហើយបន្ទាប់មកផ្សព្វផ្សាយសារនេះទៅកាន់ពិភពលោក ត្រូវនិយាយជាមួយបុគ្គលិករបស់អ្នកអំពីផ្លាស្ទីក យើងត្រូវតែធ្វើការផ្លាស់ប្ដូរ។ តើអ្នកដឹងទេ សព្វថ្ងៃនេះ នៅលើភពផែនដីយើងមានកាកសំណល់ផ្លាស្ទីកចំនួនប្រមាណ 6.3 ប៊ីលានតោន ដែលមិនបានប្រើប្រាស់ឡើងវិញ? ហើយចំនួនពាក់កណ្ដាលនៃកាកសំណល់ផ្លាស្ទីកនេះគឺបន្សល់ទុកតាំងពី 15 ឆ្នាំមុនមកម៉្លេះ។ បញ្ហានេះនឹងកាន់តែមានភាពអាក្រក់ទៅៗ បើយើងមិនបានចាត់វិធានការណាមួយនៅពេលនេះ។

 អ្នកទាំងអស់គ្នាមួយចំនួនប្រហែលជាកំពុងអនុវត្តវិធានការមួយ ឬពីរ ក្នុងចំណោមវិធានការទាំង 5 ខាងលើ​រួចមកហើយ។ យើងកំពុងជំរុញអ្នកឲ្យអនុវត្តវិធានការមួយបន្ថែមទៀត ឬបើបានអនុវត្តគ្រប់ចំណុចទាំងអស់កាន់តែប្រសើរ។ យើងមានជំនឿចិត្តថា អ្នកអាចធ្វើបាន ពីព្រោះអាជីវកម្មមួយចំនួនក្នុងប្រទេសកម្ពុជាបានចាប់ផ្ដើមអនុវត្តការងារនេះហើយ (ក្នុងនោះ សូមថ្លែងអំណរគុណដល់ Artillery, Backyard Café, Eleven One Kitchen, Friends, Little Red Fox, Blue Elephant Hotel, Expresso Café, Vibe, Lot 369 និង Knai Ban Chatt ដែលបាននាំមុខគេសកម្មភាពនេះ)។ កិច្ចការទាំងប្រាំដែលយើងស្នើឲ្យអ្នកអនុវត្តគឺមិនពិបាកឡើយ។ អ្នកអាចចាប់ផ្ដើមអនុវត្តនៅថ្ងៃនេះតែម្ដង។

 ដើម្បីជាការលើកទឹកចិត្តបន្ថែម ប្រសិនបើអ្នកគាំទ្រសកម្មភាពទាំងនេះ និងបង្ហាញពីភាពជាអ្នកដឹកនាំក្នុងការប្រយុទ្ធប្រឆាំងនឹងផ្លាស្ទីក យើងអាចដាក់ឈ្មោះរបស់អ្នកចូលទៅក្នុងបញ្ជី “អាជីវកម្មបៃតង” ដែលយើងចងក្រងឡើង (យើងនឹងបង្កើតបញ្ជីឈ្មោះអាជីវកម្មមិនបៃតងមួយផងដែរ តែ
សង្ឈឹមថាអាជីវកម្មរបស់អ្នកមិនមានឈ្មោះក្នុងបញ្ជីនេះទេ)។ យើងនឹងចែកចាយបញ្ជីឈ្មោះនោះតាមបណ្ដាញសង្គម។ មានគ្នាយើងជាច្រើនដែលយកចិត្តទុកដាក់លើស្ថានភាពរបស់ប្រទេសនេះ ក៏ដូចជាពិភពលោកទាំងមូលផងដែរ។ យើងពិតជាចង់ទៅទស្សនកិច្ចនៅទីតាំងអាជីវកម្មរបស់អ្នកណាស់ ដូច្នេះសូមធ្វើការផ្លាស់ប្ដូរទាំងនេះ និងប្រែក្លាយខ្លួនជាអាជីវកម្មបៃតងចាប់ពីថ្ងៃនេះតទៅ។

 សូមអរគុណចំពោះការចំណាយពេលអានលិខិតនេះ
