An area off the coast of Bournemouth (Poole Bay) is the new proposed site for a Mobile Offshore Drilling Unit (MODU). It will be located 6km from Studland and 8km south of Bournemouth Beach. This MODU will stand between 300 and 400 feet above the sea.

This site was rejected through considerable political pressure on the UK government as a site for a renewable energy. However, almost the exact same site is now being considered for a mobile drilling platform. Surely, the same objections must apply and therefore be considered for this installation? Wind farms were rejected due to them being an eyesore, yet this MODU will be much closer and therefore more visible. 

Over and above these concerns, all oil drilling platforms have a considerable risk of oil spills, which would affect Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) such as Poole Harbour, protected Marine Conservation Zones such as Poole Rocks, and sensitive areas for nature and tourism, such as the seagrass beds at Studland and the Jurassic Coast. Furthermore, the promotion of further extraction of fossil fuel will only serve to increase the rate of climate change, as compared to the previous rejected plans for an offshore windfarm.

With the way society is headed (towards a green future) more oil rigs is only taking steps backwards rather than forwards. 

While this project is not permanent if it is a success, future plans have been proposed such as Horizontal Drilling for further extraction.
