Why this petition matters

Started by Habitat for Humanity Trinidad & Tobago

Everyone deserves a safe, decent and affordable place to live!

Habitat for Humanity Trinidad and Tobago calls on our supporters and friends to join the fight for safe, decent and affordable shelter. Some 200,000 people in our country live in sub-standard housing conditions, with dilapidated and structurally unsound houses, a lack of running water, no electricity and less than adequate washroom facilities. Many of these families have members who are disabled, living with HIV/AIDS or part of the gender communities.

The current criteria for housing assistance through the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) specifies that applicants from these groups "Not be owner/part owner of property/land in Trinidad and Tobago".  However, these communities cannot access any private sector financing to build homes because of their income levels, even if they have good land tenure.

We are asking the Minister of Housing and Urban Development to change the policy and remove this criterion so that ownership of land is no longer an obstacle to having a safe, decent and affordable place to call home.

We further call on the national community:

  • To call attention to the need for decent and affordable shelter for vulnerable groups, especially the disabled, those living with HIV/AIDS and the gender communities living in Trinidad and Tobago.
  • To let it be known that affordable, adequate housing should be a priority for government, the corporate sector and private citizens, and that all partners and stakeholders need to be involved in finding and implementing workable solutions to the housing crisis among vulnerable groups.
  • To change the systems, policies and attitudes that create obstacles to access affordable housing and good land tenure for disabled people, people living with HIV/AIDS and gender communities in Trinidad & Tobago

By advocating for universal decent housing, we CAN alter the systems that limit access to decent housing and make affordable housing a reality for EVERYONE!
