Why this petition matters

Started by Angela Dickey

Please save the seven tall poplar tulip trees located at 213 N Edgewood Street, located in the historic Lyon Park community of Arlington, Virginia. These trees are slated to be demolished imminently, along with an existing single-family home, to make room for the construction of a new single-family dwelling. The trees stand along the perimeter of the property and can be saved without interfering with by-right development of a new single family dwelling at this address.

Lyon Park, acknowledged by the country as losing its tree canopy in a recent survey, and apparently oblivious to its eponymous parkland idyll, is about to lose a significant canopy parcel at 213 N. Edgewood st (corner of N. 2nd Rd). The site is above-average in size, and irregularly shaped (triangular) as it abuts a bike path maintained by the county. Therefore, many neighbors enjoy the shade and pastoral character imparted by the mature trees on this lot.

The new owner of the property has arranged through his builder to contract with a demolition company, Dittmar, to cut 7 of these mature tulip poplar trees, which look to date from Lyon Park's early days, given their height/diameter.

Several in the community are trying to engage Dittmar, the county Parks and Recreation office, and once the builder is identified, the builder, to make the case for preserving these trees. The trees are mostly located on the lot perimeter and should not impede by-rights construction of a new home.

Residents of Lyon Park would like to see some coverage of this as a watershed moment to test Arlington Country's will in preserving Lyon Park's tree canopy, its charm, and its environmental friendliness. We believe the county falsely promotes a "green" agenda while allowing old neighborhoods to lose their natural, hard-won beauty and healthy environs.
