The Old Coroner's Court in Sheffield City Centre is in great danger. Firestone Developments, in partnership with CODA Studios, are hoping to flatten the building as soon as August 13th.

David Cross of CODA has said "The Old Coroner’s Court isn’t listed and it isn’t a conservation area, so in theory we can knock it down. We have made an application to this effect.."

Sheffield City Council can protect this building.

We are asking Sheffield City Council Planning Authority to issue an emergency Article 4 direction, with immediate effect, applicable to any demolition or partial demolition scheme within the proposed Castlegate Conservation Area.

The developers already have planning permission for a scheme that retains the frontage of the Old Coroner's Court - they just want more profit by knocking it down altogether, and need to do this before a proposed Castlegate Conservation Area comes into force.

The Old Coroner's Court, built in 1913 to the designs of the first City Architect, FEP Edwards, is an asset to the local area, with features that echo some other fine buildings in the Lady's Bridge area.  The trend for redevelopment at Kelham Island is bound to continue towards Castlegate and this building will not be the first fine building under threat unless protection is put in place. An emergency Article 4 direction can provide interim protection for important buildings in this area until the Castlegate Conservation Area is instated.
