Why this petition matters

Started by Medical Association for Prevention of War

The new, ground breaking UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons is an enormous opportunity - our shared planet’s best chance to get rid of its worst weapons.

There are almost 15,000 nuclear weapons in the world. Each can cause catastrophic harm, killing millions of innocent civilians in an instant.

A conflict involving less than 0.5% of current arsenals would disrupt climate and crops around the world and threaten up to two billion people.

We have come within a hair's breadth of nuclear war on at least seven occasions due to human and technical errors. Add the risk of hackers, escalating  military tensions, terrorism, new generation weapons and the threat of an unstable leader launching a strike and it is clear we need to act.

All Australian political parties and representatives should support this new treaty, however the current government has actively undermined it, even though it won ICAN a Nobel Peace Prize.

It puts these weapons on the same footing as Chemical and Biological Weapons.

Signing and ratifying the treaty will increase regional security and is consistent with existing treaty obligations, including with the USA and the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). New Zealand, Thailand and the Philippines have all recently signed the ban treaty and remain strong allies of the US.

The ALP must ensure Australia becomes part of the solution rather than the problem. It’s time to get on the right side of history in order to secure a future.

We have a clear choice: to support nuclear weapons or a living planet. I urge you to act to ensure that Labor chooses well.
