Egyptian Blogger Released From Jail

Updated | 6:28 p.m. A prominent Egyptian activist and blogger, Alaa Abd El Fattah, was released from detention in Cairo on Sunday and went directly to Tahrir Square to join a protest against the country’s military rulers.

Video posted online by the Cairene blogger who writes as Zeinobia showed Mr. Fattah telling reporters in the square that the general in charge of Egypt’s military police should be arrested and put on trial for killing protesters. As he spoke, Mr. Fattah held his infant son, Khaled, born three weeks ago while his father was in detention.

As The Lede has reported previously, Mr. Fattah was detained after he published a scathing witness account of the violence at a protest in Cairo on Oct. 9, when soldiers attacked a demonstration by Coptic Christians, killing 27 protesters outside the headquarters of state television.

Despite video evidence that showed soldiers attacking protesters at that demonstration, military prosecutors investigating the killings arrested Mr. Fattah and 27 other activists, holding them responsible for the violence. One of Mr. Fattah’s lawyers told The Egypt Independent on Sunday that no charges had been dropped, so the blogger could still stand trial. Read more…
