Why this petition matters

Started by Rosie Copeland

Plastic is destroying our oceans - and while a concerted effort is being made to reduce the number of plastic bags and six pack rings going into the ocean, few people actually realise that straws are amongst the top 10 items found during beach clean ups, and can be extremely dangerous to our marine life.

It is estimated that over 500 million straws are used EVERY DAY in America alone and most of these end up in our oceans! You have probably seen countless videos showing the damage that plastic is doing to marine life, from the video of divers pulling a straw from a turtles nose, to the sperm whales found with over 30 plastic bags in their stomachs! If we don't make a change now, by the year 2050 there will more plastic in the ocean than fish!

Petitions against restaurants and supermarkets, like Tesco and Wetherspoons, has forced them to take the issue of plastic straws seriously. I think it is important to try and get as many companies as possible to commit to reducing the quantity of plastic straws being used everyday which is why I am calling on my local supermarket chain: Morrison’s to stop using plastic straws in their cafes and selling them in their store.

I believe if enough of us speak out we can force Morrison’s to switch to an environmentally friendly alternative such as paper or bamboo.

Together, let’s save our oceans!
