Save Festival Hall
Save Festival Hall
Why this petition matters
Melbourne's historic Festival Hall is under threat!
A planning proposal has been lodged with Melbourne City Council for a $65 million apartment complex, which if approved, would spell the end of Festival Hall as a live music entertainment venue.
We call on the Honorable Richard Wynne - VIC Minister for Planning, Martin Foley - VIC Minister for Creative Industries (including The Arts) and Arron Wood - Acting Lord Mayor of Melbourne, to permanently list this as a heritage building. John Wren did a brilliant job building the venue just over a century ago and if his descendants wish to build an apartment block, the best way forward would be for State and local Governments to jointly purchase the hall from the Wren family and they can use the proceeds to build their complex elsewhere.
This is a building famous for hosting live sporting events as well as some of the biggest names in music from both Australia and around the world!
The building is most infamous globally from when The Beatles performed there in 1964 and Lionel Rose's 1968 championship fight.
I personally saw one of my favourite bands perform there in October 2013 and one of my other favourite bands, performed there when I was too young to see them, in both 1985 and 1992. The atmosphere of the venue is something you just cannot replace!
