Why this petition matters

Dave has done enough time.  Please help us release him.

The family, friends and supporters of David Dark Horse Croft CRC8304772CFANO ask the Honorable Joseph A. Bulone to grant freedom to David Dark Horse Croft.
David was the eldest child of a single mother and had 2 younger sisters. His mother moved very frequently, therefore David was forced to change schools very often, thus never having the opportunity of getting familiar with other children his age, school, nor his environment.

There was no stability in his home life and it became even more dysfunctional when his mother married a man who was very abusive towards David and his sisters. Eventually this led David to leave the home at the age of 17 and finding refuge in drugs, alcohol, and living from place to place. Regrettably this led to his forming a friendship with Jeffrey Murphy. For no reason, Murphy murdered a young lady named Penny Faulkner, while David could only watch in shock and horror. Murphy then threatened David, that he would kill him also if he went to the authorities. Murphy bragged about the murder to friends and he and David went into custody. Murphy took his case to trial and was given a life sentence.

David had a public defender which convinced him to plead guilty and he would be released in a few years, never informing David of the lesser charge. David took his lawyers advice and was given a life sentence. His lawyer admitted to David's mother that he made a mistake by having David plead guilty instead of a lesser charge. Even the prosecutors said that David was the least culpable, but the judge said that his hands were tied due to the law.

David has now been in prison since 1983, and is now 51 years old. David is no longer the teenager who entered prison 34 years ago addicted to drugs and alcohol. David has wisely used his time in prison to become a better person. He is very passionate about helping others get and stay off of narcotics and alcohol. Throughout this time he has helped hundreds of other inmates learn to make responsible decisions.

He has taken numerous vocational programs, has served as chairman of Narcotics Anonymous at several prisons and served as a peer facilitator. He has worked for P.R.I.D.E. Enterprises as a foreman for the box factory, of which he had many responsibilities including, but not limited to, supervision, orders, shipments, inventory, and fork lift operator. He was always complimented for his excellent work and has been known as a very trusted and responsible employee. Unfortunately he had to leave this position because he transferred to a different prison to be closer to his family. He has countless certificates of achievement and has received his G.E.D.. and is a certified minister. He regularly attends N.A. and A.A. meetings, along with worship services. He has taken every course and class available to him.

David has been married to his wife Grace since 2006. Dave is also the proud grandfather of 7 grandchildren, by Grace's children. He has also recently been blessed with a great grandchild.
