Tell Grupo Pão de Açúcar to Stop Selling Pork from Confined and Mutilated Pigs
Why this petition matters
If you’re like me, you care about animals and you know that farmed animals have the capacity to suffer as much as the dogs and cats we all know and love. But what happens to pigs at an Aurora cooperative factory farm in Brazil will shock and disgust you. Aurora products are sold in Grupo Pão de Açúcar (GPA) grocery stores.
A shocking new investigation exposes the horror of piglets squealing in agony while workers grind down their teeth, slice off their tails, and cut holes in their ears. All of this is done without any pain relief.
Mother pigs are treated as mere meat-producing machines. Crammed inside tiny metal gestation crates barely larger than their own bodies, they can’t even turn around or lie down comfortably. These incredibly intelligent and social animals become so frustrated by extreme confinement that they desperately and repeatedly bite the bars of their cages—a sign of serious mental collapse.
This is heartbreaking and absolutely unacceptable. But together, we can end this horror.
Please, take a moment to sign this petition calling on GPA (which owns stores such as Pão de Açúcar, Extra, and Assaí) to require that its pork suppliers stop mutilating piglets without painkillers and cramming mother pigs into inherently inhumane gestation crates.
As the leading market food company in Brazil, GPA has the moral obligation to end the worst forms of animal suffering in its supply chain.
