President Barack Obama declared in Ghana, Africa on July 11, 2009 that Africa doesn't need strongmen, it needs strong institutions.

Through this petition we would like to ask President Obama to pressure President Kabila and others Government key leaders in the Democratic Republic of Congo to stop arresting, beating and killing Congolese people that are opposed to government political agenda. The constitution of the D.R. Congo guaranty the freedom of thought, conscience and religion on its article 22; Freedom of expression on article 23; Right to information, article 24; Freedom of meetings, article 25; Freedom of demonstration, article 26; and the article 60 stated that the respect of the rights of man and of the fundamental freedoms consecrated in the Constitution is imposed on the public powers and on every person.

Since Monday 19th January, 2015, there are lot reports coming from the D.R. Congo where Congolese men and women are protesting against the change of the electoral law that requires a census before any vote. Congolese people fear that the new law will delay a vote due in 2016 and allow President Joseph Kabila to stay in power beyond the date set by the constitution, which is the 19th of December 2016. 

We agreed on the right of Majority party idea to reform rules and laws; however, we also recognized all constitutional dispositions mentioned above, which give people the right of speech, freedom of meetings and demonstrations. For these reasons, we are asking President Barack Obama to use his world leader power in order to pressure President Joseph Kabila to:

1.         Stop violating human rights, which are guaranties by his own country constitution.

2.         Free all political leaders and citizens that were arrested on Monday 19th January, 2015 until the end of the current tensions in the Congo; for example, one of the opposition leader, Mr. Jean Claude Muyambo was arrested on Monday, 20th January, 2015 at 5 AM in Kinshasa.

3.         Fully restore the internet and access to social media sites without restriction of any application, and reestablish Short Message Service (SMS), which are tools of information, also guaranty by the Congolese constitution.

We also invite President Obama to ask the United Nations Mission in the Congo also known as MONUSCO to protect people of the D.R. Congo, investigate and report any violation of human rights across the country.
