Why this petition matters

Started by Hubstaff, LLC

Hi, my name is Jared Brown. Usually when I read about government fraud or scandals I think to myself that someone needs to tackle that issue. But recently I read about one I knew I had the solution to. I knew I could easily save tax payers millions of dollars.

A two year investigation into the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office found evidence of rampant time fraud that is costing tax payers millions of dollars. Here is the 16 page report that was scrubbed before being handed over. In one particular case a patent examiner claimed she had worked 266 hours, which there was no evidence for. This one incident cost tax payers $12,533.02. Of the roughtly 8,300 patent examiners nearly half telecommute from home full-time. This fraud adds up quickly.

There are software tools available to significantly reduce this fraud. I happen to make one such tool called Hubstaff. It runs on a user's desktop and provides proof of work while they track their time. It significantly reduces time fraud as a result.

The patent office suffers from a truly massive backlog of patents waiting to be examined. By reducing this fraud and waste the patent office would increase its efficiency and could use the funds saved to increase their workforce. The net effect could make a major difference to thousands of companies by granting them their patents sooner.

Hubstaff wants to put our money where our mouth is. We are offering our software free of charge to the USPTO for their entire remote workforce. The application is simple to install and use. It runs all major operating systems. Furthermore we can provide training and support to ensure the on-boarding process is smooth.

This is about doing what is right to solve a big problem in our government. Please help us convince the USPTO that this is a real solution to a really big problem. Together we can make a change.
