Miami beach is host to many big events and conventions all year round, and this weekend is no exception with Urban Beach Week. As a resident of Miami and Miami Beach for 25 years, I was appalled to hear on WLRN that we planned to reduce all major causeways to a single lane and scan all license plates for outstanding warrants and stolen tags. It is a known fact that the majority of the 250,000 attendees are African-American so we find this to be a blatant example of institutionalized racial profiling. We ask the police department to cease this policy. If it is truly for public safety, then we ask they institute the same safety plan during all major events such as Art Basel, the Boat Show, Ultra and Winter Music Conference.
