I am haunted by the harrowing images of yet another child abused and killed at the hands of a family member while the authorities remained blissfully unaware what was going on under their noses. An ever increasing roll of shame that we, as a society, need to stop. Things should be better, lessons should have been learned. It should be mandatory for Under-5s to be seen by a health visitor a required number of times a year and any family not complying should be referred to partner agencies such as Children's Centres to follow up. Children should not be slipping through the net. Money should be redirected from the salaries of several tiers of ineffective management in Children and Family Services and allocated to workers on the front line visiting families to offer help, advice and early intervention. it is unacceptable that children are dying from neglect in modern day Britain.
